Fay Thomas was one of the first students and inaugural school captain at Reservoir High School, Victoria. Fay worked as a student teacher in 1959 for six months and then entered teachers’ college, graduating in 1961. She took up her initial principal appointment in the early 1980s. She completed two master’s degrees, one at the University of Melbourne and one at Deakin University and spent a year on an International Teaching Fellowship in America. Fay was a member of the Victorian Primary Principals’ Association and chaired the steering committee for the Cooperative Research Project: Leading Victorian Schools of the Future between 1993 and 1997, where she worked with representatives of the University of Melbourne. After her retirement in 2000, Fay took up a role as one of Victoria’s first community liaison officers at the Education Department’s Northern Metropolitan Regional Office.
This scholarship will provide support for a student who is currently enrolled in the Master of Instructional Leadership at the Faculty of Education and is an experienced member of staff from a Victorian government school to undertake study or research in the fields of school leadership and management.
Value: The total prize is approximately $6,000 for 2025.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you need to:
- be a student of the Master of Instructional Leadership or Master of Education (Educational Leadership specialisation)
- have a minimum of 5 years school experience at a senior level within a school*
- be working at a Victorian government school
* This does not require a specific job title. Applicants must show that they have at least 5 years of experience in leadership roles within their schools.
Selection Criteria
Eligible applicants will be assessed on the merit of their application and previous academic results, including results for the first year of the Master of Instructional Leadership or Master of Education (Educational Leadership specialisation), if applicable.
