Scholarship Description

This scholarship is available to current and recent graduate TESOL students of the Faculty of Education who are interested in teaching and/or studying in Japan. 

The scholarship is for students who would like to expand their skills and knowledge through an international experience in Japan. The scholarship can assist with travel, initial set up costs, course fees, visa costs and other related expenses. 

Under the terms of the scholarship applicants must outline a proposal that will include teaching and/or studying in Japan.  Study could include Japanese language study, TESOL studies or learning an activity in Japanese (i.e. Ikebana, Taiko). Teaching may include paid or volunteer work. It rests with the applicant to determine the length of time proposed to spend in Japan and pursuit of teaching, studying or both.   

Value 

Between $2,000 to $25,000 depending on the duration of study and/or work in Japan and proposed associated costs. 

Eligibility 

To be eligible for this scholarship you need to be enrolled in or having within the previous three years graduated from: 

  • the Master of Teaching (Secondary) (or its successor), with a Learning Area specialisation in TESOL; OR 
  • the Master of TESOL (or one of its nested degrees, including the Graduate Certificate in TESOL) (or its successor); AND 
  • have an intention desire to teach and/or study in Japan 
Application Process
  1. Complete and submit this online application by the closing date.
  2. Eligible applications will be assessed by a panel of three academic staff members of the University.
  3. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview, referees contacted and/or further information request

Selection 

  • Eligible applicants will be assessed on the merit of their application, including the strength of the proposal and motivation outlined in a personal statement and prior academic performance in the specified eligible courses of study. 
  • Applicants must provide a clear plan that includes details of plans to teach and/or study in Japan, including a budget for the main costs. 
  • If deemed necessary by the Selection Committee further information and/or an interview may be required for shortlisted applicants.
