The prestigious and lucrative John and Eric Smyth Travelling Scholarship supports recipients who show potential as a researcher or teacher who, in the opinion of the University, can enrich the teaching profession and the work of the school by study abroad.
The Alumni scholarship can cover travel, accommodation and tuition fees (if applicable) for short programs of 1-2 weeks through to two years. The recipient can use the scholarship to support a study program overseas to:
- support a study program overseas to study education and allied subjects at a university
- study education systems at work through a study tour
- study a subject or problem which the University believes is directly related to the work of a teacher, or which will help in the advancement of education
- take a professional development course/program that relates to the work of a teacher/educator.
Advice for completing this application:
- You must meet the eligibility in its entirety to be considered (you may apply if you will have graduated from an eligible UoM course by the end of this year.
- You need to provide a clear, detailed plan regarding what you would like to do with the scholarship, should you be successful. This must include specifics, for example, the institution and name of the course you will undertake, OR, which schools you will visit, and details that show the school is willing to host you.
- This scholarship provides monetary support to the successful recipient/s. All organisational aspects are the responsibility of the successful recipient/s. This includes, but is not limited to, organising flights, accommodation and insurance and researching and applying for a suitable program of study (it is not necessary to have applied at this stage but you do need to have a fully formed and budgeted plan).
- Ensure that you read the questions carefully and provide detailed answers to each, including an itemised budget.
- Remember that the panel needs to get a sense of who you are, your personal commitment to the education sector and how this opportunity will both allow you to develop personally and benefit education in Australia.
Value: the value of each individual scholarship is variable depending on the circumstances, duration of time overseas and nature of enquiry of the recipient, and will be determined by the selection committee.
You can be considered for funding from $AUD 1,000 - $100,000:
- minimum value: $1,000-$5,000 awarded for a short study program of one-two weeks
- maximum value: $100,000 can be awarded for programs of study of up to two years
As part of this full application you will be required to include a budget detailing and justifying the amount of funding you are applying for.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this scholarship you need to:
- be under 30 years of age at the time of commencing an application
- Be planning to undertake a period of study or research overseas in the field of education
and
- Have completed any degree or teaching qualification at the University of Melbourne
- Be able to demonstrate skill as a teacher or lecturer, and an ability to conduct research in the field of education
- Have completed the Master of Education (or its successor) at the University of Melbourne.
Selection Criteria
The award is offered to the applicant(s) ranked highest by the selection panel based on their potential to enrich the teaching profession and the work of the Faculty of Education application as demonstrated by their application.
Conditions
The recipient must:
- Commence the overseas study or research in the year the scholarship is awarded
- Return to Australasia within three years of the end of the scholarship and hold a position in the field of education for a minimum of two years
- Present and submit a report to the Faculty of Education on the overseas study or research, if no formal study at an overseas university is undertaken
Note: John Smyth stated in his Will that he wishes the winner to remember John Smyth and his son Eric Smyth throughout their career, and, once they have established themselves, to contribute back to the John and Eric Smyth travelling fund and so perpetuate the spirit which originated the fund.
