The Kerry Landman Scholarship supports high-achieving mathematics graduates who demonstrate a passion for education, wish to train as mathematics teachers and are commencing the Master of Teaching (Secondary). A successful candidate will have the potential to become a leader in mathematics education. This Scholarship aims to address the shortage of mathematically trained teachers, who can passionately communicate the beauty and applications of mathematics to encourage, inspire and empower students to succeed.
Value: up to $60,000
Approximately $30,000 annually for the duration of the Master of Teaching (Secondary) degree, provided in equal installments each semester of study, provided conditions are met.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:
- have a recent (5 years or less) undergraduate degree (or higher qualification) with a major in mathematics
- be enrolled or enrolling in the 2026 intake of the Master of Teaching (Secondary) in the Mathematics Learning Area, at the Faculty of Education
- be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
Consideration will also be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need.
Selection Criteria
Eligible applicants will be assessed on the merit of their application including :
- academic achievement in previous studies as determined by course weighted average
- aspirations as a mathematics teacher provided by written statement (not more than 1000 words)
- background and experience of the applicant demonstrated through a curriculum vitae
- consideration of financial need
If deemed necessary by the Selection Committee an interview may be required and/or referees contacted.
To remain on the scholarship in the second year of the course
To remain on the scholarship in the second year of the course the recipient will need to:
- continue the Mathematics Learning Area
- achieve 75% or above in the Mathematics Learning Area subjects and 75% or above average in the first year of the course, taking into account the personal circumstances of the recipient
- take Engaging and Assessing Learners 1 & 2 within a school with female enrolments
- demonstrate outstanding teaching practice in the Master of Teaching (Secondary)
- meet the requirement for the National Literacy and Numeracy Test (required for all first year Master of Teaching students)
- provide a written statement reflecting on their impact during teaching placements in addressing the challenges in delivering mathematics curriculum, including motivating students through the provision of context, and inspiring and fostering the participation of girls in mathematics
